Experience

Hi, I'm Daniel! I graduated from Penn's College of Arts and Sciences in May, and I'm starting a Master's programme at Penn in the spring. I've tutored both writing and math in the past, and the past two summers have taught classes in history, government, and philosophy at a boarding school summer programme. I've also worked extensively with high school and middle school students as a dorm parent, adviser, coach and chaperone. Though I'll be busy with graduate school in the spring, I want to continue to help spark a passion for learning in students, and pass along what I myself have learned throughout my life. As a teacher and a tutor, I have always been a good listener, and have striven above all to help my students figure things out themselves. I think a teacher succeeds most in his task the less he has to say. I am a big believer in the socratic method---guiding students towards the answer by asking them questions rather than telling them what they need to know---and I've always helped my students the most when I've simply suggested a way of approaching a problem and let them struggle with it and overcome it on their own. People remember best what they've done themselves, not what they've been told how to do; so the more I can help my students try to solve a problem or write an essay on their own, with a few words of guidance and a lot of encouragement, the more they'll learn and the more they'll come to enjoy learning throughout life. Some other things about me you that might want to know: I scored a 2170 on the SAT (750 Writing, 720 Maths, 700 Verbal) and a 35 on the ACT. My GPA at Penn was 3.46, with a 3.88 GPA in political science (out of 4). I've lived in China on three occasions, most recently studying abroad for eight weeks in the summer of 2011 in Beijing. In high school I was a member of my school's national champion economics competition team. Throughout high school and college I also wrote, reported and edited for several student publications, participated on debate teams, and played trombone for jazz and concert ensembles. I won my high school's awards for best student of economics and political science, was named Cum Laude in both high school and at Penn, and am a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha national political science honours society.
